It is a place of great historical and cultural value, which welcomed almost 13,000 visitors in 2024 alone. Our advice is to take your time, wandering from room to room and daydreaming about life as it once was. You can choose between a self-guided visit, with a free audio guide, and a guided tour.

What is a house museum? Countess Sofia’s gift

Since 1981 the palazzo has been open to the public as a house museum (casa museo). But what does that mean, and how is it different from a traditional museum? In an ordinary exhibition space, objects are kept in display cases and themed rooms; here, by contrast, the furnishings, from the furniture to the smallest ornaments, keep their original arrangement: the cutlery on the tables, the slippers under the rocking chair, the paintings hanging in the very same spot. The house conveys the intimacy of the people who lived in it, so much so that walking through its rooms feels like retracing five centuries of family history: the Tozzonis came to Imola from Tuscany at the end of the fifteenth century. The palazzo we see today, on the other hand, took shape between 1726 and 1738, joining together older houses.

It was the last descendant, Countess Sofia Serristori Tozzoni, who donated it to the town of Imola in 1978, together with all its furnishings, so that it would remain an intact record of her family’s life.

The grand entrance and the piano nobile

As soon as you step inside, the effect is theatrical, thanks to the great grand staircase (scalone d’onore), built together with the palazzo under the direction of Domenico Trifogli (the design is attributed to Alfonso Torreggiani) and adorned with elegant stucco statues by the Flemish sculptor Francesco Janssens. Climbing the staircase, you reach the first floor, the piano nobile or main floor, and the spacious reception hall where guests were once welcomed and from which the two wings of the palazzo open out.

The Baroque Apartment and the Pope’s Drawing Room

To the west lies the Appartamento Barocchetto (the late Baroque apartment), fitted out between 1736 and 1738 for the wedding of Giuseppe Ercole Tozzoni and Carlotta Beroaldi. This is the realm of the intimate Barocchetto, the Emilian late Baroque style inspired by France, laid out as a series of small rooms: the Salotto del Papa (the Pope’s Drawing Room), where according to tradition Benedict XIV, a relative of the bride, once stayed, the Salotto Rosso (Red Drawing Room) and the Alcova (Alcove).
